Sticks and Stones

1.                Today’s advisory lesson will be either an open discussion or a written assignment where students will examine their own actions as it relates to their interactions with other students here at Sunset Junior High.

2.                Students will answer the following questions.  Teacher may decide the format for answering, either written or orally as a class discussion.  If it is done as a written assignment, teacher may want to have certain students read their answers at the end of the advisory period to stimulate discussion about proper behavior.

3.                Questions:

a.     “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but names can never hurt me,” is an old saying.  Is this statement true?  Why or why not?  Explain your response.

b.    If you could go back in time and undo one thing that you are sorry for, what would it be and what would you do different next time?  While we can never go back, we can at least turn our regrets into valuable lessons which we will learn from.   Please discuss.

c.     The novelist Henry James once said, “Three things in human life are important.  The first is to be kind.  The second is to be kind.  The third is to be kind.”  How can young people encourage each other to treat one another with kindness rather than cruelty?  Discuss.
